The United Nations Human Rights Council was established by the United Nations General Assembly on March 15, 2006. It replaced the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, which was often criticized for the lack of action by its member nations, some of whom failed to guarantee the human rights of their own citizens. The Human Rights Council's purpose is to promote human rights and fundamental freedoms around the globe. In addition, its purpose is to make recommendations to the General Assembly in order to further develop international law on human rights.
